Car tinting is not a tribute to fashion, but protection from bright sunlight, which can turn the interior of a vehicle stuck in traffic into a steam room. They also harm the interior, as the leather upholstery of the seats suffers from them, losing its presentation. According to GOST 5727-88, the windshield of a car must transmit at least 75% of the light, so the possibilities of its tinting are limited. But in order to protect yourself from the effects of the sun, it is not necessary to fight the visible spectrum. It is enough to get rid of ultraviolet and infrared radiation, which is not visible to the eye, but plays a key role in warming up the cabin. For this purpose, an athermal film is used on the windshield, which transmits light waves of the visible spectrum within the limits established by GOST, almost completely blocking access to infrared and ultraviolet rays.

Modern technologies make it possible to create unique materials with predetermined properties. These include athermal films that work as a filter for the invisible range of light waves. Most of the heat objects receive not from visible rays, but in the ultraviolet and infrared range. Therefore, if they close access to the car interior, then it will heat up much less, and visibility will practically not change, and the glass will seem transparent.

Such films are made using special technologies of their many layers, each of which is tuned to absorb a narrow spectrum of radiation. Taken together, this makes it possible to cover almost completely the ultraviolet range of waves and more than half of the infrared.

Types of films

All known types of films can be divided into four main groups:

  • painted;
  • metallized;
  • spatter;

The first is made of polyester, which consists of many layers. Some of them are transparent. Their purpose is to provide strength and protection against burnout. Others are painted in the main color of the film. Their number determines the throughput of the film - the more such layers, the darker the material looks. The advantage of this type of film is its low price and large color gamut.

In metallized materials, some of the polyester layers have the thinnest coating, which is usually made of aluminum. Such material reflects infrared radiation much better than painted films, which means it better protects the car interior from heating.

In spatter film, the desired product color is obtained by using ion-exchange coated layers. Technologically, this is the most complex and expensive manufacturing method. This method allows you to make a perfectly even coating of almost any substance. Materials produced in this way have high wear resistance and practically do not burn out. Spatter-metallized films are a combination of three previous technologies.

Athermal films produced by various manufacturers differ both in manufacturing technology and consumer properties. Therefore, when buying and installing, special attention must be paid to the following indicators:

  • ability to transmit light;
  • product color;
  • method of installation on glass;
  • operational resource.

Depending on the glass on which the film will be installed, its throughput may be different: the most transparent ones are installed on the windshield of the car, and the most dark ones - on the back.

The color of the film may also be different. Often found from a product with a bluish and greenish tint. The Chameleon, which changes shades depending on the lighting, has gained particular popularity.

The reason will be that the glass itself has far from 100% transparency. Most often, this figure is in the region of 90%. Therefore, if we take a film that transmits 80% of the light and put it on such glass, then the total result will be determined as the product of the transmission coefficients: 0.8 x 0.9 = 0.72, i.e. 72%. Formally, this figure is less than acceptable, so such a car tinting will be considered a violation of traffic rules.

Therefore, the film should be installed taking into account the available glass transmission capacity, which is best measured beforehand. Often a car can have the original factory tint, which will also affect the overall result.

It should be noted that such small deviations cannot be noticed by eye, but the device picks up easily. Of course, it is unlikely that a traffic police officer will stop cars with outwardly transparent windows to check their throughput. But why violate GOST, if it is easy to do without it? For side windows, the requirements are less stringent. For them, a throughput of 70% is allowed, so it is fashionable to put a darker film on them. Ceteris paribus, it will let in even less heat, which means it will become more comfortable in the cabin. It is very unpleasant to get into a vehicle that has stood for several hours in the sun. The sensations from this are comparable to an attempt to settle down on a hot frying pan.
